About Buxar

Buxar City is the headquarters of the Buxar district of Bihar state. The city lies on the eastern border of the Bihar and shares its borders with Uttar Pradesh. The city with total area of 1,620 km2 is located on the banks of river Ganga. The main languages spoken here are Bhojpuri and Hindi. The entire region is well connected via roadways and railways to other parts of Bihar and India.

History of Buxar is believed to be dated back to pre-Ramayana period. It is said that Vishvamitra Ashram was located in Buxar. Bhagawan Rama killed Tadaka(Rakchhasi) here only. Buxar is also associated with two famous battles in medieval history. One fought between the Mughal emperor Humayun and Sher Shah Suri at Chousa in 1539 A.D which resulted in the victory of Sher Shah Suri. The later was fought in 1764 between Muslim Mughal Mir Kasim with the support of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II and Nawab Shuja Ud Daulah of Oudh (Awadh) and the Britishers. The Bitishers defeated Mir Kasim in this battle. The historical discoveries also through some lights on the relation of Buxar with ancient civilisations of Mohanjodaro and Harappa. Geography and Climate of Buxar

Geographically Buxar is located at 25.56049°N and 83.98054°E. Buxar covers an area of 1,620 km2 and is elevated at 55 m above seas level. The holy river Ganga form its northern border and on the other side of the river lies the state of UttarPradesh. The western border of the city is formed by the river Karmanasa. The area is largely low lying alluvial plain of river Ganges and her tributaries- Thora and Karmanasa. The region is known for the large production of Wheat. The climate of the region is moderate type. Summers starts from mid-march to mid-June. Followed by monsoons which lasts till end of September. The winters starts in November and end till march. Chausa Hoard ch place which got its name from chausa Mangoes. Sher Shah defeated Mughal Emperor, Humayun at this very place. The place also got importance as first known bronze hoard was discovered here in the Gangetic valley. Katkauli Ka Maidan is another famous tourist spot in Buxar. The famous battle of Buxar in 1764 was fought here. At this very place Britishers defeated Mir Qasim (Nawab of Bengal), Shah Alam II (Mughal Emperor) and Shuja-ud-Daulah (Nawab of Awadh).
